Ushers and greeters are servants of the assembly, welcoming and
greeting people, helping them find places, directing people to find
needed information when they have questions, providing parish
registration forms to new members who inquire. They place seasonal
or Sunday literature or envelopes as needed, and hand out bulletins
at the end of Mass. They clean and organize the assembly space for
the next liturgy. Ushers also facilitate and assist the parish
collections of money and food, directing the procession with the
gifts and the communion processional. Training is provided.
It has been said that the sense of community or "church" that is
communicated in the first thirty seconds of a person's arrival at
church, forms the impression that person will have of the quality of
hospitality and welcome in that church. A minister of hospitality is
often the first human contact a person has as they enter a church.
Christian hospitality and welcome is what our ushers and greeters
seek to offer those who gather for Sunday Eucharist.

One hot summer day as Abraham sat in the door of his
tent he noticed three men had appeared. Realizing that
these were no ordinary people, Abraham rose and ran to
meet them. "My Lord, if I have found favor in your
sight, don't pass by but stay a while and while we tend
to your comforts. Rest under the shade of this tree
while I fetch water to wash your dusty feet and prepare
a food for you to eat." Abraham and Sarah fixed a meal
which Abraham placed before the visitors, and then he
stood back to watch respectfully while they ate. |
